Equity concerns in transportation infrastructure protection against sea level rise

چکیده

Waterfront communities are facing unprecedented challenges with global Sea Level Rise (SLR) becoming a reality. The households in these likely to be inundated, and inundation of links the urban transportation system will bring more interruptions communities. Some residents not able access their workplaces or education if is interrupted. Among waterfront communities, many considered disadvantaged that have concentrations minority low-income families. Residents vulnerable because they tend less relocate other neighborhoods lower risks SLR. Many proposed protection strategies against SLR at regional levels, goals usually achieve greater good for whole region. However, distribution benefits burdens may unequal across different present paper utilizes detailed hydrodynamic simulation activity-based quantify impact potential on San Francisco Bay Area geographical region analyzed. Important insights from analysis obtained: improvements accessibility mobility, resulting protecting Bay-crossing bridges, often than others. located next entrances bridges negatively impacted. Additional measures should taken relieving reduce inequality.

Sea-level rise induced amplification of coastal protection design heights

Coastal protection design heights typically consider the superimposed effects of tides, surges, waves, and relative sea-level rise (SLR), neglecting non-linear feedbacks between these forcing factors. Here, we use hydrodynamic modelling and multivariate statistics to show that shallow coastal areas are extremely sensitive to changing non-linear interactions between individual components caused ...

Contemporary sea level rise.

Measuring sea level change and understanding its causes has considerably improved in the recent years, essentially because new in situ and remote sensing observations have become available. Here we report on most recent results on contemporary sea level rise. We first present sea level observations from tide gauges over the twentieth century and from satellite altimetry since the early 1990s. W...

IN HIS NEWS AND ANALYSIS PIECE REPORTING ON THE NEWLY RELEASED FIFTH ASSESSMENT report (AR5) by Working Group I (WGI) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) (“A Stronger IPCC Report,” 4 October, p. 23), R. A. Kerr highlights three fundamental conclusions about climate change that were assessed with equal or greater confi dence than in previous IPCC reports. He also points to th...

Sea-level Rise Forecast Model

The paper analyzes the melting pace of ice cap in the North Pole and its influence on the rising sea level. The paper constructs the linear and non-linear models between rising sea level and the year by quoting data from Florida Tide Gage Station. The paper also contrasts the two models and selects the non-linear model. By adopting the model, the paper predicts the height of rising sea level ev...

Detecting anthropogenic footprints in sea level rise

While there is scientific consensus that global and local mean sea level (GMSL and LMSL) has risen since the late nineteenth century, the relative contribution of natural and anthropogenic forcing remains unclear. Here we provide a probabilistic upper range of long-term persistent natural GMSL/LMSL variability (P=0.99), which in turn, determines the minimum/maximum anthropogenic contribution si...
